“Dementia is a term used to describe a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities” (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Several diseases can cause dementia. Depending on the cause, the patient will show different symptoms. The most common cause of dementia in older adults is Alzheimer’s disease. But there are other causes of dementia such as damage to the vessels that supply blood to the brain, accumulation of balloon-like clumps of protein (Lewy Body dementia), the breakdown of nerve cells and their connections in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain affecting the personality, behavior and thinking of the individual, the damage of certain nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord (Huntington’s disease), traumatic brain injury, and Parkinson’s disease. As the disease progresses, the patient will lose the ability to function requiring assistance completing activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, bathing, elimination, or taking medications as prescribed. Dementia patients are unable to make decisions, putting them at risk for falls, burns, motor vehicle accidents, and more. They are also at risk to abuse and neglect, something that occurs often, because caregivers do not understand the changes the patient that develops dementia suffers.
